A spinal condition affecting 4.5-12% of the population, a scoliosis is a sideways bending of the spine, which forms and angle greater than 10 degrees. Occurring more frequently in girls than boys, a scoliosis can have a negative effect on physical and emotional health. Conditions such as pain, inflammation, reduced balance, respiratory problems, poor body image, increased emotional distress and in severe cases cardiopulmonary problems resulting in early death.

Approximately 80% of the time, the cause of the scoliosis is unknown or “idiopathic.” Unfortunately, most cases of scoliosis are not detected until the sideways bending of the spine becomes obvious in the child’s posture. For example, a typical scoliosis present with a right head tilt, a high right shoulder, high right hip and a pronounced rib “hump” on the right hand side. It is these cosmetic deformities that typically prompt parents to seek treatment.

Traditional treatment for scoliosis consists primarily of a wait-and-see approach until the curve progresses past 25 degrees. After which, bracing for 23 hours per day and exercises are the standard treatment. This bracing can be very painful on the child especially while sleeping. However, recent research has proven that both bracing and exercise are ineffective at preventing the progression of a scoliosis and may actually worsen the problem by causing muscle wasting and spinal degeneration. This is why many cases require surgical insertion of metal Harrington rods. Post-surgery, the person will typically endure a lifetime of increased pain, medication, depression, degeneration and difficulty performing daily activities. This is why 40% of individuals will be defined as “severely handicapped” after the surgery.

Fortunately, there is hope for children and adults suffering with the effect of scoliosis. Recent research shows that chiropractic care can be an effective, non-surgical approach to reducing and correcting a scoliosis. A recent study, using the latest in chiropractic adjustments and neuro-muscular reeducation protocols showed a 62% reduction in scoliosis in just 4-6 weeks! These amazing results have lead to the development of the C.L.E.A.R. protocol for scoliosis treatment, which is based on chiropractic principles and techniques. (www.clear-institute.com)

If you or someone you love is concerned about scoliosis, a consultation with your chiropractor should be your first step. Early detection with early treatment is far more effective that the wait-and-see approach! Traditional treatment of observation, bracing and exercise will not reduce or correct a scoliosis and may simply prolong pain and suffering. If the prospect of around the clock bracing and spinal surgery due to scoliosis concerns you, perhaps you should try chiropractic!
